Here's another almost free and easy idea to add some flavor to the backyard. A fire pit is a quick and easy build. This took me less than 3 hours and cost less than $30. The paver's were free, and I used about 3 tubes of this concrete sealant:
1. Ok, this is so easy, get some paver's ideally for free off craigslist.
2. Brush away where ever you are going to put the pit, stones, twigs, garbage, etc, get rid of it and clear the spot up. Lay out the first layer until you are happy with the size. And make sure you brush off the bricks so that dirt etc won't affect the sealant.
3. The sealant is STRONG! You won't need to cover the whole stone with it, you will just need a few lines, I did about 3 lines the length of the stone, and staggered them for design.
4. Layer them up, you don't need to wait for the first layer to dry, you can keep stocking them up as you go.
5. Oh yeah I should've mentioned this first, but fire safety, nothing should be above your pit, no awnings, phone/power lines etc. And make sure you have a functioning hose near the pit just in case something happens.
6. Wait for the stones to dry. Make sure you clean the pit out after each use, ideally the morning after. But I've been lazy and have let ash sit in there a few days.
When I lived nearly broke in Brooklyn the only fire pit we had was lighting garbage in metal trash cans to survive winter there. So it's a nice addition. Invite some friends over and enjoy a nice fire pit social!!!

What a helpful blog! With the summer coming I have been looking to add an outdoor fire pit to our yard. Now that the kids are older I think it might be a perfect place for them to hang out during those summer nights. Thanks so much for this helpful post!
